Treating Pityriasis For Rapid And Long Term Relief
Healthy Skin Clinic takes a holistic approach when it comes to treating skin conditions. This ensures that we get quick results, whilst improving our clients overall health and helping to prevent a re-occurrence of their skin disorder.
1. the nutritional status of the body with a review of current dietary habits and assessment of lifestyle habits such as stress, to work out contributing factors. As part of our holistic pityriasis treatment, specific dietary recommendations are made;
2. any underlying health problems, infections such as a yeast overgrowth or other imbalances that have contributed to the pityriasis. Your skin specialist will make recommendations for herbal or nutritional products to correct any causative health problems;
3. the specific condition of the skin and recommend natural topical agents, especially formulated to decrease the appearance of your pityriasis based on your individual needs.
Your Pityriasis Treatment
A Pityriasis Treatment program will be provided to you following your skin consultation. The recommended treatment for pityriasis is based upon the analysis of your general health, the condition of your skin and other useful health information that was revealed during your skin consultation.
Your Pityriasis Treatment recommendations will include dietary advise, lifestyle recommendations, supplements to promote healthy skin and health in general. Treatment will also recommend the use of specific topical products with ingredients known to improve the appearance of pityriasis.
Will I Need Any Tests For My Pityriasis Treatment?
Because all skin problems have an internal imbalance or trigger, testing can be useful. Your skin care specialist will recommend any tests that may be useful, during your Initial Skin Consultation.
One of the most important parts of treating a skin condition such as pityriasis is knowing what is happening in terms of mineral levels. Excesses or deficiencies of some minerals can make a person more prone to skin problems. Whilst diet and lifestyle often contribute to any imbalances the presence of heavy metals can also upset the normal healthy balance of nutrients. An Oligoscan can be performed in our clinic to determine if there are any issues with minerals, heavy metals or oxidative stress.

Types of Pityriasis
- pityriasis rosea
- pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor)
- pityriasis alba
- pityriasis lichenoides
Pityriasis rosea treatment
Pityriasis rosea is characterized by the presence of a ‘ herald patch’ .
The herald patch is a single lesion that is larger than the other lesions of pityriasis rosea. It usually occurs one to 20 days prior to the general rash. The herald path is around 2-5 cms in diameter and is usually oval in shape. It is pink or red with some scale and is often mistaken as a ringworm or psoriasis. The herald patch is usually found on the trunk and is followed by other lesions which appear on the thigh, upper arms and neck.
Pityriasis rosea is not usually itchy but there are sometimes exceptions. Although most information about pityriasis rosea states that is lasts around 6 weeks only, in practice I have found that it can last for some months.
The cause of pityriasis rosea is unknown but usually affects teenagers and young adults.
Your Skin Specialist will recommend a treatment to help you improve the appearance of your pityriasis rosea. Often that includes a product that helps exfoliate the scale, calm the redness and sooth any itching or discomfort. Practitioner Only Products will be recommended to address any underlying triggers that are identified during your Skin Consultation.
Pityriasis alba treatment
As the name suggests, pityriasis alba leaves the skin with pale marks. Pityriasis alba is a type of dermatitis which initially produces scaly pink to red patches which are round or oval in shape.
These patches are most apparent in children with a suntan as they do not tend to tan like the surrounding skin. The condition can persist for several years.
When helping to improve the appearance of the pityriasis alba, your natural Skin Specialist may recommend a topical product that contains ingredients known to improve the appearance of hypopigmented skin. You will also be given advice in relation to dermatitis plus the general health of the skin and the body, to support balance within the skin.
There are two types of the uncommon rash called Pityriasis lichenoides – an acute and a chronic type. The acute form presents with a rapid eruption of small scaling lesions that turn into blisters with crusted red to brown coloured spots.
In the chronic form of pityriasis lichenoides, small & scaling papules develop gradually. They flatten out and disappear over a period of weeks.
Pityriasis versicolor treatment
Pityryasis versicolor is a commonly occurring skin problem
particularly in hot and humid climates. Frequently pityriasis versicolor is known as ‘tinea versicolor’ as it is linked to a dermatophyte fungus.
The term versicolor refers to its changing colour from red, brown, pink to white. The lesions of pityriasis versicolor are usually restricted to the back, upper arms and chest. They are generally flat, sometimes with a fine scale.
Pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor) is not usually itchy. Being that the cause is a fungus, pityriasis versicolor thrives in hot environments where people often wear light clothing that only partially covers their upper body and arms. Tinea versicolor can therefore be distressing and embarrassing as it is often quite noticeable (see picture opposite).
In hot regions in particular the condition can appear on and off for years if left untreated.
An effective pityriasis versicolor treatment will include the application of topical creams that contain antifungal/antimicrobial ingredients such as natural essential oils. Topical applications need to be applied for several weeks after the lesions have disappeared.
Fungus can be opportunistic on the skin when the environment is right. It is therefore important to ensure the body has adequate minerals, a sound immune response and that the pH of the skin is not too acidic. The skins acidity can be affected by mineral deficiencies.
NOTE: The topical products for problem skin conditions are only available following a Skin Consultation With A Skin Specialist from Healthy Skin Clinic.
